The Bold Look of Kohler
The Bold Look of Kohler, you’ve seen the gorgeous ads, you may even have some in your home. But did you know that Kohler is an actual town in Wisconsin that has been home to this family run business since 1873?
Kohler is best known for its line of baths, sinks, toilets, and other bathroom fixtures. The company is also a leading producer of electric generators and small engines, owns two distinguished furniture manufacturers (Baker and McGuire), and operates successful hospitality and real estate businesses in Kohler, Wisconsin, where it has its corporate headquarters and largest manufacturing facilities. One can even register for a free 3 hour tour of four of its factories, which is exactly what I did at the end of September.
Walking the 2.5 miles around a small part of the picturesque Kohler campus was incredibly fascinating. From the impressive design centre to the factories where they make vitreous china, pour molten metal to make cast iron sinks, plate faucets and enamel tubs, all flowed with such a precision of operation. They even have an artist in residence program where artisans can use their facilities to create pieces that they may not have had a chance to before.
Design professional or not, if you ever find yourself near Kohler, I would highly recommend registering for the tour, which starts at 8:30am. No cameras or recording devices allowed. Closed toe shoes only.
101 Upper Road, Kohler WI 53044. Please see the link below for directions and a map of the Village of Kohler.
